Before it turned residential, Tierrasanta was part of a Marine Training Camp called Camp Elliot. The area still plays host to the Murphy Canyon Naval housing unit. After Marine Corp decided to close the camp in the 1960s, Camp Elliott fell into the hands of the city of San Diego. Partnering with private companies, the city proceeded to develop Tierrasanta for housing.
