About South County Coastal
The South County Coastal region is situated south of downtown San Diego. This region encompasses South San Diego Bay and extends all the way to the border with Mexico. Its proximity to the border makes it a convenient location for a day trip. South County Coastal encompasses several cities, unincorporated communities, and classic Southern California-style neighborhoods. It’s also home to shipyards and industrial complexes.
The central location of South County Coastal allows quick commutes to downtown and the airport. Visitors may want to stop here for a day or budget stay as the area is up-and-coming with new luxury hotels and restaurants. Older parts of town, the business district, and even the Bayfront area are undergoing redevelopment.
Where to Live
Chula Vista, Bonita, and Imperial Beach are the three main cities of the South County Coastal area. The South Bay region is also home to San Ysidro, the busiest land border crossing in the world. Although living in San Diego doesn’t come cheap, the South Bay area features several places where budget buyers can find affordable homes.
Home to a population of approximately 250,000 people, Chula Vista is the largest South County Coastal community. After welcoming its first residents in the early 19th century, Chula Vista has continued to evolve as a comfortable, small-town community with urban-style dwellings. The majority of Chula Vista homes for sale feature historic Mission-style architecture in intact and restored conditions. The fast population growth has also necessitated the development of condos, apartments, and affordable single-family homes.
Buyers pining for a more simple life in a more rural and equestrian area should consider Bonita which is home to roughly 10,000 people. Situated in a gorgeous valley, residents enjoy living on the ranch only moments away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The highlight of Bonita’s recreational life is its walking trails.
The most southern beach city in California is Imperial Beach. Home to over 25,000 residents, Imperial Beach is located only 5 miles northwest of Tijuana, Mexico, and 14 miles south of downtown. With roughly 4 miles of beach, one of San Diego County’s best surf spots, the Boca Rio beach break is located here. In the last ten years, this beach community has undergone a significant makeover making it more commercially viable. Besides a few smaller hotels for accommodation, Imperial Beach remains a mostly residential city.
Community Amenities
Whether you are seeking an exciting experience with family and friends, or an impressive backdrop for recreation and special events South County Coastal has it all. Several hospitals, including a VA hospital, a cancer treatment center, numerous community clinics, and a military base are all part of South County Coastal.
One of the highlights of living in South Bay is the Cross Border Xpress (CBX). This bi-national connection between San Diego and Tijuana is an enclosed pedestrian bridge that connects directly to Tijuana International Airport. The airport allows for easier, hassle-free international travel in and out of San Diego.
Employment Opportunities
Military jobs in South County Coastal are plentiful thanks to the Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach, the Naval Base in San Diego, and the Silver Strand Training Complex. The Port of Los Angeles which is one of the busiest ports in the world is also located in the area. Home to companies such as Boeing and Northrop Grumman, South County Coastal is also well known for its aerospace industry.
